Item Description

There are many Spinel localities in New York State, but the best known examples are those from the Town of Warwick, specifically from Amity and Edenville. This piece is mostly likely from the Henry Rudy Farm locality as it's very similar to others I've seen in the past. It features fairly sharp, lustrous, octahedral crystals measuring up to 7 mm which have been exposed by etching away the white-grey colored marble in which they formed. The beige material is simply host rock, not another mineral species. The color of the Spinels is kind of slate grey hue, which is typical for the crystals from this locality. Interestingly, both Amity and Edenville are part of the Franklin Marble Belt (as in Franklin, New Jersey). Ex Kay Robertson Collection (#7491). Kay is a prominent California collector, who specialized in European classics (see the article in the March-April, 2007 Mineralogical Record and the 50+ page article in the German Magazine "Mineralien Welt" November-December 2017).
