Item Description

The specimens from around Amity, New York are classics from the East Coast of the United States, which date back to the 1800s. This area is just across the border from New Jersey (a few miles north of Vernon), and is actually an extension of the famous Franklin Marble. It's a classic aluminum-bearing marble deposit, featuring among other things, some iconic crystals of Spinel. This piece features a predominant, sharp, lustrous, black (Pleonaste) octahedral crystal of Spinel measuring 1.0 cm across, associated with dark golden-brown Phlogopite Mica and crude crystalline areas of orange-brown Chondrodite on marble matrix. I can see a few silvery-grey metallic spots of what is most likely Graphite on the piece as well. The Spinel crystal is in good shape, but it's not damage free, though the Spinels from this area are rarely completely pristine. If you're a fan of minerals from the East Coast of the US or specifically Spinel, don't miss out on this attractive miniature sized piece from this classic locale. From the collection of Gerry Morvell.
