Item Description
Spinel is a gem that comes in a great range of colors. They are unique to me as they almost have a metallic quality in their luster, and fine cut stones really look beautiful in any kind of light. Most people are familiar with the Ruby Spinels, but a large percentage of Spinels out there are not red. This is a gorgeous purple Spinel with slight pinkish highlights. It has excellent cutting and is good sized for the material. Most Spinel gems are rarely over 1 or 2 carats, so find a stone this size is a big deal. The gem has nearly eye-clean clarity and an "Oval Brilliant" cut. If you look on the GIA website, they have a great quote about Spinel, "Spinel is a good candidate for the title of “History’s Most Underappreciated Gem.” Some ancient mines that supplied gems for royal courts from Rome to China produced spinel, but it was usually confused with better-known stones like ruby and sapphire." This to me, is a great way to allow people to understand the significance and importance of Spinel. The high retail price on this gem is $892.50.
