Some of the finest Spinel crystals in the world are those found around Mogok. This piece is an excellent thumbnail with very sharp and highly lustrous, smooth octahedral faces. The piece is almost 100% damage free, but I can see a tiny ding on one end, so it's nearly a perfect "floater". The color in reflected light is essentially black, but with very strong backlighting, a tiny amount of deep red color can be seen. It's important to emphasize the impressive sharpness of the crystal, as Spinels from Mogok can be somewhat rounded on the edges when they reach this size. An excellent textbook crystal of this classic material. Specimen weight is 3.2 grams. From the collection of Bill ("Burma Bill") Larson of Fallbrook, California.
