Item Description
1969 saw the initial discovery of a zone in the Mogul Mine containing hundreds of superb Sphalerite crystals. Highly translucent with a fiery amber color, these crystals also have excellent luster and complex forms. Ranging up to 1 cm in size, these outstanding Sphalerites are associated with a coating of micro Smithsonite, a characteristic combination for this large zinc-lead mine. Closed and flooded in 1982 with the crystallized zones long past, it is easy to see why pieces like this garnered the Mogul Mine such international attention. Recently deaccessed from the Tim Sherburn collection.
