A fantastic, pristine, stout, 360-degree, tapered twinned sphalerite spike dramatically dominates this exceptional large sphalerite plate from the famous Elmwood Mine. Surreal skeletal features enhance the frontal face of the spike, with other faces being sharp and smooth. All of the splendent metallic-looking sphalerites appear to be jet-black in normal light, but bright light reveals flashes of classic rubyjack color. The bottom attachment is entirely rubyjack sphalerite. Renowned for world-classic calcite and fluorite, Elmwood and its nearby brothers, have also produced exceptional sphalerite and barite specimens. The material is common enough in mediocrity but THIS specimen is simply outstanding, way beyond the norm. Classic material from the Art Soregaroli Collection and valued at $1000-plus. Probably from the 1970s or 1980s.
