Item Description

Sphalerite is a well-known sulfide species, found in a plethora of world localities, but this particular piece is from the lesser-known Dundas Quarry in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. We've only had a handful of these to offer over the years, and this one is quite possibly the best piece we've put in the auctions. The Dundas Sphalerites are often richly colored with warm hues, but what makes them really desirable is the gemminess of the crystals. This piece is a great example of said material featuring excellent, gemmy, deep honey-orange colored, sharp, highly modified crystals with minor matrix. If you look closely, you can see some of the Sphalerites have formed "Spinel"-twins. The piece is in superb condition, with virtually no damage that I can find on the display side, and it GLOWS with color when backlit. If you collect Sphalerites, worldwide sulfides or minerals of Canada, this is certainly a fine quality example from an elusive locality that would make a fine addition to your collection.
Ex Brian Kosnar specimen.
