Item Description
Here we have a rarely seen specimen of Sphalerite from the Welland Canal. Now the label accompanying this specimen says it's from New York, but the canal itself exists in Canada and opens into Lake Erie. I suppose it could have possibly be found right at the New York border of the canal, but I'm not entirely sure. I've seen similar specimens from the Niagara Falls Quarry in Niagara County, but I can't say for certain if this piece came from that locality. If anybody out there has information as to specifically where this specimen might have been found, please feel free to reach out and let us know. With that said, this is a wonderful thumbnail sized piece featuring sharp, lustrous, gemmy, rich honey-orange colored crystals of Sphalerite measuring up to 7 mm on drusy Quartz matrix. Excellent condition all over and very fun to view up close.
