Item Description

The remote Nanisivik Iron Mine is above the Arctic Circle on Baffin Island and is one of the most remote and inhospitable mining locations on earth. The mine closed in 2002. The mine is famous for sulfide pseudomorphs and excellent calcite specimens. This is the most dramatic and unusual large pseudomorph we have seen. Sparkly microcrystalline sphalerite and pyrite have completely pseudomorphed a very rare for the locale, large, tabular, hexagonal pyrrhotite crystal. The coup de grace of this striking piece is the grotto in the center lined with larger mirror-bright pyrite and sphalerite crystals. Facinating and perhaps unique material from this noted locale.
