Item Description

A rarely seen matrix display specimen of Spessartine Garnet from the classic New England locality at Haddam, Connecticut. You don't see many well-formed crystals on matrix like this from Haddam, especially with crystals this size. This small cabinet specimen hosts a 1.2 cm, dark brownish-red colored trapezohedral crystal of Spessartine sitting on off-white colored Feldspar matrix. The piece sits beautifully on its own without the aid of a base or clay. It may not be the most colorful Garnet specimen in the world, but pieces from Haddam are highly prized among collectors, as many of them date back to the 1800s. From the worldwide collection of David Burgess (1951-2016). David was a prolific species collector from Newington, Connecticut, and the namesake for the extremely rare cobalt arsenate species Burgessite, which he discovered.
