Spessartine Garnet (large floater crystal)

A very attractive, classic, "floater" Spessartine crystal from this famous locality showing very sharp, highly lustrous, heavily striated, dodecahedral faces on all sides. Minor Quartz and Albite can be seen on the back, but the piece is essentially crystallized everywhere. This is a large crystal for the locality, bigger than most you'll see these days. The color is a deep wine red when viewed with reflected light, but through transmitted light, it exhibits a glowing fiery orange-red color around the edges where the crystal is thinner. These specimens seemed to have "dried up" on the market recently, and its a shame because they are simply some of the most unique and distinctive Garnet crystals extant. The combination of unique form, lustrous faces, and intense color make these specimens a must-have for any Garnet collector. This piece is valued in the inventory at $1,800, and weighs 173.51 grams.
