Spessartine Garnets are range from vivid deep red hues to bright glowing orange colors, depending upon their chemistry. A manganese-rich Spessartine will have more of an orange color, while an iron-rich example will be more of a red hue. This piece is a rich wine red color, well-formed, trapezohedral crystal group of Spessartine, free of matrix. When strongly backlit, the piece shows a fiery internal color with decent gemminess. If you flip the piece over, there is a small indentation on the underside of the specimen, where a little black Schorl crystal can be seen. For Garnet collectors, this is an attractive Fe-rich Spessartine, and the pieces from Shengus are among the best red Spessartines in the world.
