Item Description

Here we have an impressive and fine quality specimen of Sørensenite, a sodium tin beryllium silicate species, named in honor of Henning Sund Sørensen, a mineralogist from the University of Copenhagen. This piece is a very large specimen for this species comprised almost entirely of pale pinkish Sørensenite crystals in a "jackstraw"-esque configuration. Individual crystals (or at least partial prism faces) measure roughly 1.8 cm long. Truly an exceptional specimen for this rare species in terms of size, color and quality. Almost every crumb of Sørensenite ever found has come from the Ilímaussaq complex and the ONLY other reported locality for the species outside of Greenland, is a place Alcala in the Canary Islands! Don't miss out on this superb display quality specimen of a mineral that is virtually unseen on the market, especially in pieces of this size and quality.
From the collection of Chester ("Chet") S. Lemanski Jr. of Browns Mills, New Jersey (https://www.mindat.org/user-461.html). Collection #20218CL. Chet was born 1947 in started collecting minerals circa 1957. He worked briefly as a drill runner at the famous Sterling Mine, in Ogdensburg, New Jersey and from 1987 to 1990 he helped convert the mine into a public access mining museum. He has held the role of treasurer, vice president and president of the Franklin-Ogdensburg Mineralogical Society (FOMS), and has been a board member and vice president of the Franklin Mineral Museum. The rare copper arsenate, Lemanskiite was named in his honor in 1999.
