Item Description
A beautiful rich blue (it almost has a deep purplish overtone) polished slab of Sodalite from the well known Sodalite locality at Swartbooisdrif, Namibia. This is fine quality, lapidary grade massive Sodalite, and with strong backlighting, one can see some small translucent areas around the edges. The piece weighs 109 grams. This specimen comes from the collection of Willard W. Wulff (1904-1998) of Colorado Springs, Colorado, a prominent figure and collector of Colorado minerals. Wulff was one of the founding members of the Colorado Springs Mineralogical Society in 1936. You can read Willard's bio on the Mineralogical Record website here ( http://www.minrec.org/labels.asp?colid=1528 ). The piece comes with one of Wulff's famous type 3x5 index cards, where he says the piece is from "Africa", but does refer to it as "An exceptionally fine polished slab". A wonderfully eye-catching piece of this now hard to find material.
