Item Description

A wonderfully sculptural large smoky quartz/amethyst from the Reel Mine. Reel Mine amethyst and smoky quartz/amethyst are an uncommon and highly desirable North Carolina classic. The tightly intergrown very glassy, transparent to translucent prisms have striking dark smoky terminations and edges above light blush purple and colorless interiors. The crystals reach 4.7 cm and some are doubly terminated. In great shape overall, with only a trivial bit of termination and edge scuffing. The noted basal periphery wear is certainly acceptable in the context of this fine large example. Some of the finest Eastern USA amethysts have come from the Reel Mine and this is a striking and impressive large example. See the 1990 Mineralogical Record article in Vol. 21, No. 3. Ex Lee Burnett Collection of Morrison, Colorado. Rarely available in this size, richness and quality.
