Item Description

An exceptional, amazingly sculptural large smoky quartz and goethite combination from an obscure claim in the Crystal Peak area (near Pikes Peak) of Park County. An impressive 10.7 cm vertical smoky quartz crystal is dramatically accented at the base by striking 5.0 cm horizontal smoky and intergrown radial hemispheres of gleaming brown to charcoal-gray goethite blades. The frosted satin lustre stepped-growth smokies appear to be black to dark brown in normal light, but backlighting reveals surprising translucence with rich smoky color. The large smoky is complete all-around, in great shape, with one side having a patch of goethite. The tip is very gently bruised and a contact by the goethite patch where another crystal once lay, has no damage, per se. The small smoky is partially contacted, but has no damage. Collected in 2010 according to the former dealer label. Ex Bob Reynolds Collection, a well-known fossil and mineral expert and Curator of the San Bernardino County Museum.
