Here we have an incredibly beautiful and fine quality, large Smoky Quartz gem from the vast granitic pegmatites in the Pikes Peak Batholith area of Colorado. While gem quality Smoky Quartz are not unheard of from this famous part of Colorado, it's exceedingly rare to find a crystal that is large enough and CLEAN enough to yield a stone like this. Most of the stones I've seen from this area rarely exceed 20-25 carats, and THIS gem is nearly 100 carats (!), which is incredibly impressive for the material. This stone is a beautiful custom faceted example with a "Round" cut, and an enticing smoky color, but what makes it really special is the fact that it has a "Fantasy" cut. This style of cutting is where the underside/pavilion/culet area of the gem has actually been carved to create beautiful geometric patterns, freeform designs or unique shapes that are seldom seen in any colored stones on the market today. Fine quality, and a rare locality make this a very desirable stone, truly a museum stone. If you have a fine Smoky Quartz specimen from Colorado, this gem would make a superb pair for a "rough and cut" set, or it would stand alone as a stellar "doorknob" gem to add to your collection.
