What an impressive and incredibly beautiful / fine quality, large Smoky Quartz gem from the vast granitic pegmatites in the Pikes Peak Batholith area of Colorado. While gem quality Smoky Quartz crystals have been found for decades in this famous part of Colorado, it's exceedingly rare to find a crystal that is large enough and CLEAN enough to yield a stone like this. Most of the stones I've seen from this area rarely exceed 20-25 carats, and THIS gem is approaching 200 carats (!), which is incredibly impressive for the material. This stone is a beautiful faceted example with a "Portuguese Pear" cut, and an enticing smoky color (with an almost "Citrine" overtone). Fine quality, superior size and a rare locality make this a very desirable stone, truly a museum stone. If you have a fine Smoky Quartz specimen/crystal from Colorado, this gem would make a superb pair for a "rough and cut" set, or it would stand alone as a stellar "doorknob" gem to add to your collection. For reference, the retail price on this stone is $8,677.00 ($50/carat).
