Smoky Quartz (Gwindel)

Quartz crystals known as 'Gwindels' are one of the most fascinating forms of Quartz to be found. Indeed, they are so interesting, unusual, and attractive that they hold a place of distinction within the entire mineral kingdom, period. In Gwindels, the Quartz crystals stack, side by side and on top of each other, creating these wonderful and intriguing vertical clusters. This well-formed, completely GEMMY Gwindel has a perfectly water-clear, smoky color that is classic for Swiss Smokies. The terminations of the crystals are sharp, with some wear in just one area. There is just a small amount of rotation between the crystals along the a-axis, which is another very distinctive characteristic of this habit. This is a superb miniature with great clarity, high luster, and excellent form. So gemmy, in fact, that you can see Dr. Pohl's number right through it near the base. This was part of a large suite she had of different gwindels of miniature size from localities across Switzerland, curated and assembled over decades (60 years and more!). A fine specimen easily worth $2500 or more if you saw it out for sale at any European show.
