Item Description

Smithsonite is one of Tsumeb's signature species, and this cabinet-sized specimen has its own array of attractive features in both color and geometry of shape. Richly covering the matrix, the Smithsonites have an appealing yellow tone, with amber-tinted edges that give many of the crystals a sharp, distinctive appearance. This particular coloration is caused by traces of Iron and Cadmium, as the chromophore. The Smithsonites range up to 1.5 cm, and the exaggerated, flattened, rhombic form can almost make the lustrous crystals have a hexagonal disc-like look to them at just the right angle. Preferential effects are always fascinating, and the pyramidal texture to the some of the crystal faces creates a compelling look. The fluorescence is a highly-unusual (for Smithsonite), deeply-saturated, pink-orange that both surprises and satisfies. This is an aesthetic and interesting cabinet-sized specimen from the historic Tsumeb Mine.
