Item Description

Yellow-orange Smithsonite crystals completely cover and are prominently displayed on this large, very aesthetic plate from Tsumeb. The colorful, translucent Smithsonites blanket the entire piece with interlocking, 5 to 8 mm rhombohedral crystals. The sheer quantity of crystals is astonishing, on one piece. The color is due to cadmium content and the world's best crystallized examples of this variety do come - or rather, did come - from Tsumeb! This piece scintillates with the reflections scattering light off of the shockingly large number of randomly oriented rhombs all over this three-dimensional piece that shows no damage except for some minor contacting around the periphery. This is, like many of the Pohl collection pieces, a relic of what was available in the 1970s-1980s and yet, in this size and condition, very few specimens must exist. Valued $10,000-plus.
