Item Description
When it comes to Smithsonite from Namibia, a lot of people think of about the specimens from Tsumeb, but Berg Aukus does not get the recognition is deserves for being one of the most significant Smithsonite localities in the world. It can be said the size, quality and crystallization of the Smithsonites from Berg Aukus is BETTER than Tsumeb! I have seen a wide variety of habits and colors of Smithsonites from Berg Aukus, and this piece is no exception. It features a rich coverage of large, fine quality, gemmy, beautiful yellow color scalenohedral crystals of Smithsonite measuring up to 3.2 cm sitting on matrix. To be fair, the largest crystal is actually a doubly-terminated, composite group, but it's much larger than any other Smithsonite on the specimen. Nearly all of the crystals are damage-free, though a few tiny imperfections can be seen here and there, and the lower periphery is obviously contacted where the piece was removed from the pocket wall. The overall quality, aesthetics, color and form make this a very desirable specimen from this noted Smithsonite producer. Fine Smithsonites from Berg Aukus are among the most desirable species for the locality. I've seen many different habits and colors of Smithsonite from this locality, but this particular piece is really fine, and the eye-catching balance and appeal leave nothing to be desired. If you collect Smithsonites or Namibian minerals, don't miss out on this beautiful miniature from this well-known mine. This piece comes from the collection of well-known mineral dealer and collector, Richard A. Kosnar, the namesake for the phosphate species, Kosnarite, who had a presence in Namibia in the early to mid 1970s, importing superb specimens from places like Tsumeb, Berg Aukus and the Emke Mine. Valued at $6,000 in the inventory, and the piece comes with a FREE custom acrylic display base.
