Smithsonite on a Calcite Cast (fluorescent) (Flynn Coll.)

No matter how you slice it, this is an amazing specimen for Tsumeb and just in general, for the size and engaging shape of it. It is a huge and complete pocket (of anything) from Tsumeb to come out intact, attractive, and mineralogically fascinating. First thought to be a cast of Smithsonite pseudomorph (replacement) after Calcite, we don't think that is strictly true. Looking at the layering, you can see layers of tan-colored (Smithsonite) and white-colored minerals (Calcite). The striking fluorescent view supports the idea of this piece being Smithsonite as a thin exterior coating ON a Calcite cast, rather than replacing it (which adds a little weight and gives the outside a more firm feel when you tap at it). It is a 'Horn of Plenty' in every way. Simply outstanding, and better in person. This is from the Namibian collection of longtime dealer and collector Shields Flynn, of North Carolina. We purchased his Tsumeb collection in the past and although it was mostly miniatures and small cabinets, this was the biggest single specimen in the collection, a centerpiece in a display case. It did not fit in size with anything else he had, of 300 Namibian minerals - but it is so dramatic and interesting, he kept it for decades in the Tsumeb collection. It is big, but it is so eye-catching and interesting, it is worth giving it the space in the case. This was valued at a cost of $6000 in the collection purchase. I have seen many smaller ones, but no other this size, so perfectly intact.
