Item Description
Two generations of smithsonite with different crystallization encrust the matrix plate on this rich and showy old-time two-sided rib from the famous mines at historic Lavrion. Grayish-white, translucent bubbly banded botryoids with waxy luster cover the 'A' side of this excellent piece. This side also hosts a nifty rich sprinkling of tiny second generation rice grain-like smithsonite crystals. The botryoids on the 'B' side are darker gray and have less luster from iron oxide inclusions. Interesting chemistry here! This hefty old-time zinc ore specimen, at 295 grams, is from an East Coast collection. The box lid says the piece came from well-known US dealer George English, although the label was lost in a flood at one point, making this rich and highly representative smithsonite from this classic locale a century old.
