Item Description

Tsumeb is an amazing locality, producing hundreds of minerals, a large number of which are the finest examples of their species ever found. The Smithsonites from Tsumeb are varied in their colors and styles, and I don't think there's another locality on Earth that has produced the wealth of different examples of Smithsonites like this famous mine. This piece is a particularly interesting example as the main crystal measures a whopping 4.1 cm long, which is large for the locality, as most Smithsonite crystals aren't anywhere near this size. The crystal has a bright vitreous luster on the surface, with nearly colorless internal clarity, and it's smartly sitting on light beige colored rhombic Dolomite on matrix. I looked at the crystal closely with a loupe, and it is very close to being doubly-terminated, but one end termination doesn't look 100% complete, so I'm erring on the side of caution and I'm going to say it's NEARLY doubly-terminated. Several other smaller Smithsonites can be seen near the central portion of the main crystal for a nice touch. A really cool Smithsonite from this prestigious locale. The piece comes with an old label written in German from an unknown collection.
