Item Description
Smithsonites from Broken Hill, Australia are well-known and instantly recognizable. Often shaped like rice grains, the waxy luster gives these gemmy crystals heft and body in their appearance. Up to 1 cm in size, the crystals are spread evenly across a thin layer of bone-white Kaolinite, ands all rest across a classic matrix of stalactitic Coronadite. Historically, the mineralization at Broken Hill was found by a local stockman, Charles Rasp, and the first mining leases were pegged in 1883 by him and a local consortium. The mines have operated continuously to the present day. Combination pieces such as this are signature specimens from this renowned locality, and this is a very fine, highly aesthetic, three-dimensional example. Previously in the Miller collection from the 1800’s, after which it went to James B. Cone and the Wadsworth Atheneaum, and then to the Loomis Chaffee School (this label style is known to have that history). From the large worldwide collection of historical minerals, of George Elling of New Jersey.
