Item Description

Lustrous orange-brown second generation smithsonite coats the attractive clustering of juicy translucent first generation mint-green smithsonite botryoids on this very showy and sculptural small cabinet from the well-known Monte Cristo Mine at Rush. The bit of bruising reveals the true nature of the two-generation botryoids, adding character. The mine closed in 1962. This extinct Arkansas zinc mining district has produced some outstanding smithsonite specimens. Smithsonite from the Monte Cristo Mine is an Arkansas classic. See the 1993 Mineralogical Record article in Vol. 24, No. 4. This is an unusual and rare color varietal with excellent form. Ex Bob Reynolds Collection, a well-known fossil and mineral expert and Curator of the San Bernardino County Museum. He passed away in 2020.
