Item Description

Smaltite is the arsenic-deficient variety of skutterudite. It is quite uncommon worldwide and is rare in display-quality specimens. A rich cluster of sharp, lustrous, metallic-gray, smaltite cubes to 5 mm is aesthetically concentrated on one end of the massive and rich ore of botryoidal, native bismuth. Much of the bismuth has a nifty purple tint from cobalt. Seldom on the market in this combination quality. Ex John White Collection of Seattle and acquired in 1967, according to his faded label. Valued at $400-500. This is a real old-time combination rarity from this district and among best of species for the mineral for any locale. They are few and far between today.
