Item Description

A rare and striking example of "skunk" calcite with amethyst from Uruguay. Three sets of goethite stripes (skunks) with attendant glassy amethyst crystals growing between the stripes are dramatically evident on the sides of the large, lustrous, translucent, calcite scalenohedron. It is fascinating, that the three skunks and rows of amethyst crystals merge at the termination of the calcite crystal! See the 2009, Vol. 40, No. 2, Mineralogical Record article, "Skunk" Calcite, on this rare and desirable phenomenon. Ex Art Soregaroli Collection. Valued $1500-2000
