Item Description

Here we have a very atypical Native Silver-bearing specimen from Cobalt, Ontario. A large mass of intergrown, metallic gray, granular, scintillating Loellingite is host to several leafs of Native Silver. The aggregates of microcrystalline Loellingite are irregular to almost arborescent in shape and cover much of the front and rear of the light colored, highly contrasting, tan matrix upon which the Loellingite crystallized. The leafy Native Silver, although of similar color to the Loellingite, is distinct in its form and is actually quite rich with individual leaves ranging in size from just less than a centimeter up to 2 cm in length, less than a millimeter thick and have wavy edges. It's a very unusual and contrasting display piece from this little known mine in the Cobalt District of Ontario, Canada. From the diverse and historic collection of one of the great field collectors and mineralogists of mid-1900s Texas, Albert Kidwell of Houston (1919-2008), after whom the mineral Kidwellite is named. It is hefty at 591 grams, nearly 2 pounds in weight. A historic and unusual silver specimen acquired in 1967.
