Item Description
An elegant, 6 mm long, beautifully burnished curved silver wire on acanthite is aesthetically perched atop calcite matrix on this showy and classic old-time combination from the historic mines at St. Andreasberg. The crystallized calcite matrix is shot through with acanthite adding contrast and heft. Ex Kay Robertson Collection # 5389 and acquired from the Lidstrom's at the 1968 Federation Show. Kay assembled a nice suite of classics and rarities from this famed district. Kay is a prominent California collector, who specialized in European classics (see the article in the March-April, 2007 Mineralogical Record). See the Mineralogical Record St. Andreasberg Special Issue, May-June, 2017, Vol. 48, No. 3. The is piece undoubtedly dates to the 1800s, as the last mine closed in 1910. Excellent combination material from this famed locale. Very rich silver ore with moderate pink calcite fluorescence.
