Item Description
Freiberg is one of the most famous localites for wire Silver, as noted by the recent cover story in the Minerological Record. This piece features two thick wires that branch out beautifully, with a patina that ranges from oxidized black to brassy. The delicate nature of the wires never ceases to amaze me, they are so intricate and graceful. Production of these ended in the 1890's, and this particular specimen came out of an East German collection years ago. While there will probably always be some amount of controversy as to the exact origin of these Silvers (or at least some of them), there is no denying their beauty. This piece was from the Keith Proctor collection in the 1990s and I am embarrassed to say what the price was from him to the collector at that time, but suffice to say it is well worth AT LEAST $7500 now, and has a surreal and 3-dimensional quality that is just mesmerizing in person.
