Item Description
A really cool piece of this famous large meteorite fall that took place nearly 70 years ago (the meteorite hit at 10:38 am on February 12, 1947) in Russia. It has been stated that these samples are a coarse octahedrite, and I'm labeling this material as "Kamacite" which is a nickel-rich variety of native iron, though the following minerals have been reported in this material: Taenite, Plessite, Troilite, Chromite, Kamacite, and Schreibersite. This particular piece comes with a label stating that it is comprised of 93% iron, 5.9% nickel, 0.46% phosphorus, 0.42% cobalt, and 0.28% sulfur. The entry on Wikipedia states: "Though large iron meteorite falls had been witnessed previously and fragments recovered, never before in recorded history had a fall of this magnitude been observed. An estimated 70 tonnes (metric tons) of material survived the fiery passage through the atmosphere and reached the Earth." A great opportunity for a collector to own a piece of history from this tremendous meteorite. Weight is 14.7 grams.
