Item Description
Pentagonite is, first and foremost, a significantly rare and gorgeous blue species of mineral that is among our favorite rare species as well. It also happens to be the dimorph of the more common mineral, Cavansite - meaning which, for reasons not fully understood as yet, we have a mineral of the same chemical composition that mysteriously forms different crystal structures, even though they both occur in the same location and seemingly formed under the same conditions. The species are, however, different species of minerals, despite the similarity of chemistry and color. Pentagonite is perhaps 1000 times more rare, and found much less seldom, than the famous Indian cavansites. And, they are best of species, as well. That being said, we can count the number of pentagonite specimens with crystals exceeding 3 cm, that we have seen in the last few decades, easily. They are not many! This amazing "pocket piece" hosts a 3.2 cm, elongate, perfect gemmy, translucent pentagonite crystal just reaching across an empty cavity within! A small hole in the back allows backlighting, as a bonus, to show off the translucency. We love pocket pieces, and buy all we can get when they, rarely, occur from various locations, because they are so educational and interesting. This well trimmed pocket shows how the material formed, and acts as a perfect display to protect this otherwise fragile crystal that might not have survived extraction and handling otherwise. Honestly, it is difficult for us to value such a specimen - large examples are not often seen to begin with. And, this kind of safe display, makes the piece unique. It can be safely shipped. This was from a recent pocket found in 2023.
