MINDAT does not list hematite or limonite for Santa Clara County, making this a very rare specimen for the county. Siderite is listed, but no examples are shown. We believe the multitude of tiny, sharp, sparkly to matte-finish, rust-brown, rhombs covering this sculptural, hollow, mounded crust are siderites and this piece is essentially solid and very rare siderite. Perhaps a unique specimen for the county! Probably older material, but no proof. Ex Bob Trimingham Collection and from the Gene Darter Collection. A MUST for the locality or species collector.
