Item Description
An old specimen of what was once called "Meerschaum" (seafoam) as well as "l'Ecume de mer" and "keffekill". Sepiolite is an uncommon hydrated magnesium silicate, with a similar appearance to Palygorskite or "mountain leather". Specimens are rare today from this Austrian locality. This piece features off-white fibrous Sepiolite semi-fibrous "needles" sitting on host rock matrix. A great piece to add to any rare mineral collection. Ex Kay Robertson Collection (#6862). Kay is a prominent California collector, who specialized in European classics (see the article in the March-April, 2007 Mineralogical Record and the 50+ page article in the German Magazine "Mineralien Welt" November-December 2017).
