Item Description

Here we have a superb quality example of the famous old Semseyite from the Herja Mine. The piece features excellent, lustrous metallic, deep grey color radial "rosettes" of Semseyite with minor associated Quartz set on dark reddish-brown Sphalerite matrix from the Herja Mine in Romania. The largest "rosette" measures about 1.0 cm across. The quality is excellent up close as the semseyites are notably sharp and well-formed. You really need to look at the piece up close to see the impressive quality of the crystals. This is a very good one for what it is, especially because the crystals are distinct and not dull and washed out like many I've seen from this locality. You can't get pieces like this anymore from this mine, and they are some of the finest examples of Semseyite in the world. Priced at $4,000 in our inventory. From the collection of Chester ("Chet") S. Lemanski Jr. of Browns Mills, New Jersey (https://www.mindat.org/user-461.html). Chet was born 1947 in started collecting minerals circa 1957. He worked briefly as a drill runner at the famous Sterling Mine, in Ogdensburg, New Jersey and from 1987 to 1990 he helped convert the mine into a public access mining museum. He has held the role of treasurer, vice president and president of the Franklin-Ogdensburg Mineralogical Society (FOMS), and has been a board member and vice president of the Franklin Mineral Museum. The rare copper arsenate, Lemanskiite was named in his honor in 1999.
