Item Description
VERY RARE, old-time, urban New York City Schorl specimen from the Grand Central Terminal. Divergent sprays of lustrous, jet-black Schorl crystals, to 2.2 cm, are seen on four sides of the blocky Manhattan schist matrix. The railroad station has been named the "Grand Central Terminal" before its completion in 1913 and there were two previous stations here dating back to 1871 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Central_Terminal). The specimen is very uncommon, even for New York City collections. The specimen is illustrated in the Schorl MINDAT Photo Gallery for Manhattan Island. Formerly in the Joe Cilen Collection No. 8995. Joe was a well-known New Jersey collector, who accumulated over 23,000 specimens. He passed away in 1997. Ex George Loud Collection No. 5437 and acquired in 2001. Rare, perhaps unique, old-time urban NYC schorl from the famous station.
