Item Description

This mine is well-known for producing excellent crystals of Scheelite, the best of which are the finest Scheelites ever found. Sometimes you'll find them in associated with Beryl (Aquamarine), and while neither species is rare in the mineral world, to find them together in showy display specimens like this is rare. Here we have a classic and beautiful small cabinet specimen from the famed Pingwu Mine in China featuring a sharp, well-formed, lustrous, rich orange colored, pseudo-octahedral crystal associated with a rather gemmy, pale blue color, notably tabular Aquamarine crystal on light golden bladed Muscovite matrix. I will point out that tabular Aquamarine crystals are rare in the mineral world, and arguably the best ones are those from this famous locale. The Scheelite measures 3.3 cm across, and the Aqua measures 3.1 cm. The Scheelite shows a bright blue fluorescence under SW UV light. For the most part, there is little damage, though there is a contact on the top of the Scheelite so it's not 100% pristine, but the balance and arrangement of the piece makes it a very worthwhile and piece for anybody who collects Scheelite or minerals from China.
From the collection of Jack Halpern No. 4142. Jack was born May 18, 1920 in Brooklyn, New York, but has been a long-time resident of San Francisco. He assembled one of the great mineral collections in the world encompassing over 3,200 specimens with a specific emphasis on color, quality, and style/aesthetics, which is evident in every piece. He admired specimens of all sizes from thumbnails to large cabinets and the vast majority of them rank from fine to world-class in their quality.
Above all else, Jack is considered to be the greatest gentleman in the modern era of mineral collecting. He is beloved by all those who have met him, and he truly is one of the most iconic figures in the mineral world. We recently acquired Jack's collection, and the VAST majority of these pieces will be offered here in the auctions, as we feel that everyone deserves and equal opportunity at acquiring these important, well-documented and fine quality pieces for their collections. We are honored to have the opportunity to offer Jack's treasures to everyone on a regular basis in the auctions.
