Item Description

A notably RARE locality Scheelite specimen from this lesser known mine in the Ore Mountains of Saxony. The name Grube Gelbe Birke translates into the Yellow Birch Mine, which was a silver-producer dating back to the early 1700s! This piece features rarely seen crystals of Scheelite for the locality. The sharp, well-formed, pseudo-octahedral (pyramidal tetrahedral) crystals measure up to 1.7 across, and have a notably white hue, but fluoresce a brilliant bright blue color under SW UV light. One corner of the largest Scheelite is contacted, so the piece is not completely damage-free, but this is the ONLY Scheelite we've ever had to offer from this locality and it's a good overall display piece, not some esoteric reference specimen. Minor associated purple Fluorite can be seen as well for a nice touch. If you collect Scheelites, tungsten minerals or German minerals, this is a cool locality specimen that is virtually unseen in today's market.
From the collection of Kurt Hefendehl (#557 D), a well-known German collector all over Europe with worldwide contacts to dealers and collectors. He started collecting seriously at the age of 14 and his great and varied worldwide collection reached over 6000 pieces. He was very active mineralogically until shortly before his passing in 2020 at the age of 82. Considering his collection had a large number of pieces, it still had an unusually high standard of quality from most worldwide localities. He particularly specialized in all classics as well as minerals of the Black Forest, where he spent much time collecting. His Black Forest and German subcollections went to his good friend Wolfgang Wendel. We at The Arkenstone have the privilege of offering the remainder of this great worldwide collection through our various platforms.
