Item Description

During the 1970s-1980s, there were several discoveries of fine quality and eye-catching Scheelite crystals at the Camp Bird Mine. These desirable specimens are certainly the most well-known Scheelites from any Colorado locality with their distinctive form and clove purple-brown hue. Like most Scheelite, these crystals will fluoresce a bright blue-white color under SW UV light. The crystals on this specimen show good bi-pyramidal tetragonal form with smooth faces and good luster. The largest crystal measures 2.8 cm across, which is very good sized for the locality. There really is no matrix to speak of, just a bit of attached Quartz underneath. Overall the quality is good, though not every crystal is 100% complete, but the main crystal is large and pronounced and really grabs one's attention.
Valued $2,000-$2,500.
Ex George Loud Collection No. 48.1.3.1 CO.1; 3026. George (born August 16, 1942) is a well-known mineral collector from Washington, DC and South Carolina respectively, and was a patent lawyer by trade for over 50 years. He assembled one of the great mineral collections in the U.S., comprising worldwide specimens, and in later years he sold the worldwide specimens to focus on minerals of the United States, specifically locality suites with an emphasis on amazing representation of species while still maintaining fine quality. The specimens remarkably range from micros to all the way up to large cabinets in size. We recently acquired most of his impressive 9000+ piece collection, and the VAST majority of these pieces will be offered here in the auctions, as we feel that everyone deserves and equal opportunity at acquiring these important, well-documented and fine quality specimens for their collections.
