Item Description
For many years, one of the premier localities for Scheelite was the now defunct, but historically significant Tae Hwa Mine in South Korea. Along with Scheelite, this mine produced some very attractive tungsten species in its day. The mine has been closed since the early 1970s, and these specimens are still regarded as classics for their respective species. This specimen hosts a predominant, sharp, lustrous, well-formed, clove-brown color pseudo-octahedral crystal of Scheelite measuring 3.6 cm on edge, with a few minor additional Scheelites, on Quartz matrix. Unfortunately the outer edge of the big Scheelite crystal is incomplete, but it's still a good sized crystal of this now very hard to find material. The piece shows excellent blue fluorescence as well. See the Mineralogical Record, Vol 9, pgs 133-136 for more info about this locality. From the collection of Chester ("Chet") S. Lemanski Jr. of Browns Mills, New Jersey (https://www.mindat.org/user-461.html). Collection #1878CL. Chet was born 1947 in started collecting minerals circa 1957. He worked briefly as a drill runner at the famous Sterling Mine, in Ogdensburg, New Jersey and from 1987 to 1990 he helped convert the mine into a public access mining museum. He has held the role of treasurer, vice president and president of the Franklin-Ogdensburg Mineralogical Society (FOMS), and has been a board member and vice president of the Franklin Mineral Museum. The rare copper arsenate, Lemanskiite was named in his honor in 1999.
