Item Description

Scapolite specimens are, in general, very uncommon from Madagascar and according to MINDAT, have not been reported from this Betafo District pegmatite shown on the Fioravanti label. Scapolite has been reported for the Betafo District, though. A sharp, well-formed, 2.5 cm, lustrous and translucent, olive-green scapolite crystal is nicely set atop matrix of cleaved blocky calcite (modest purple-red fluorecence) and dark minerals. Calcite has been reported from Itrafo in the Betafo District, but not scapolite. This piece is probably from a skarn deposit. Rare, old-time, and possibly unique material (wherever it's from), probably dating to prior to 1937. Obtained from the Boubee Collection in Paris in 1961.
