Item Description

An incredibly hard to find cabinet specimen from an obscure locality in San Bernardino County, California. The piece is labeled as coming from Ord Mountain and is the ONLY specimen we've ever had to offer. It's a notably RICH cabinet sized piece filled with good quality, well-formed, sharp, prismatic, silvery-white crystals of Scapolite (Meionite or Marialite) measuring up to 2.4 cm sitting on host rock matrix. If you look closely, you can see little golden colored "wedge"-shaped crystals of Titanite sprinkled here and there for a nice touch. Most of the Scapolite crystals are in good shape, but there is some peripheral roughness here and there mostly where the piece was removed from the pocket wall. Overall it's a very impressive example of a species (group) that is not very well-represented from California. A must have piece for any fan of California minerals, as you may not see another like it anytime soon. Priced in our inventory at $1,800. From the collection of Robert (Bob) Reynolds who passed in August of 2020. Bob was a well-known fossil and mineral expert and former Curator of Earth Sciences at the San Bernardino County Museum in California. The rare phyllomanganate-chromate species Reynoldsite was named in his honor in 2011.
