Scapolite (Rare Cat's Eye Gem)

This stone is from a new find of Scapolite from Tanzania last year. Purple Scapolite is much more rare than the yellow variety, but a reddish color Scapolite like this is very hard to find, especially in "Cat's Eye" stones ! To be correct, the names of the species of "Scapolite" are Marialite and Meionite. Nonetheless, this is a beautiful "Round Cabochon" cut gem with a deep reddish color and a rather sharp "eye". The eye is best seen with a strong penlight, and that's what was used to photograph the gem. These stones are virtually impossible to find on the market, and this gem is valued at $243.
