Item Description
Here we have a lovely and very rare faceted Sapphirine gem from Sri Lanka. Please note that Sapphirine is a valid mineral/gem species, and is not to be confused with Sapphire, which is actually a varietal name for Corundum. Sapphirine is distinguished from Sapphire due to the fact that it is a monoclinic silicate, not a hexagonal oxide like Corundum. The name is obviously derived from its similarity to the color of blue Sapphire. Typically, Sapphirine is not gem quality, it is almost always opaque, and faceted gems are rare. This "Rounded Oval / Roval" cut stone has some visible inclusions, with a steel blue color (and an almost slight greenish overtone). This is one of the few Sapphirine gems that I have offered in the auctions in quite some time, so don't miss out on this opportunity to snag a cool rarity for your collection.
