Sapphire (bi-color crystals) on matrix

This is a wonderful display quality piece of these beautiful Sapphires from a find in Madagascar dating back to the early 2000s. These pieces are most certainly some of the best matrix Sapphires to come from any locality for several reason. Typically, Sapphire crystals are not often found on matrix, and the crystals are often rounded, dull and not terribly colorful. These specimens from Madagascar feature crystals with typically textbook euhedral form, sharp faces and superb luster, but I would argue that the most alluring aspect is that the crystals are rather colorful. This small cabinet specimen features a pair of good quality, euhedral, well-formed, sharp, rather lustrous, purple and pink bi-color Sapphire crystals measuring up to 1.6 cm long sitting atop a matrix of black Mica and white Calcite with massive red Garnet. The topmost crystal is in excellent condition, and while the crystal on the right has a small nick, it's still in good shape. We haven't had many of these to offer in the last few years in the auctions and in terms of size and quality, this is a very nice example of these well-known and now very hard to find Corundums from Madagascar. I will also point out that virtually all of the Sapphires from this area show at least some kind of a color-change from sunlight to indoor lighting. They also show good fluorescence as well. It wasn't the easiest piece to photograph, and I would say that it honestly looks better in person. Valued in the inventory at $950.
