Item Description

A sculptural V-shaped or upright specimen of five intergrown striking calcite crystals. Fine-grained sandstone has richly included/replaced the aesthetic cluster of tapered calcite scalenohedrons. The two large impressive stout doubly terminated scalenohedrons are 7.3 and 7.0 cm long. These unusual pseudos come from a difunct South Dakota locale, Rattlesnake Butte (Devils Hill) near Interior. The crystals grew in the Miocene-aged sand matrix. Older material from a longtime east coast collection, collected in the 1960s and 70s and seldom seen today. The locality is now a National Natural Landmark (NNL) and is closed to collecting (MINDAT).
