Item Description
Safflorite is an uncommon Co-Ni-Fe arsenide, with some of the finest examples coming from the famous silver-cobalt mines of the Cobalt-Gowganda Region. Microcrystalline, matte-finish safflorite encases or pseudomorphs a very sculptural jackstraw cluster of dentritic spinel-twinned silver crystals. Scattered purple tint from the cobalt content adds color and pizzazz. Very fine material from this well-known mine, that was intermittently active from 1917 to the late 1980s. Ex Kay Robertson Collection # 7815 and acquired at the Detroit Show in 1975. Kay is a prominent California collector, who specialized in European classics (see the article in the March-April, 2007 Mineralogical Record). OLD MINE, RARE MATERIAL!
