Item Description
A treasured and rare collection of rutile crystals from historic Hiddenite, North Carolina. 20 of the 21 crystals are twinned, with one single needle. Highly lustrous and striated, the crystals have rich wine-red color. The different forms of the twins are striking. Some resemble ancient Babylonian cuneiform writing! Seldom available and highly desirable, classic old-time material from the Dr. Ed David and Robert Nowakowski Collections. Ed was Science Advisor to President Nixon and assembled several world-class mineral collections. These rutiles were painstakingly put together over many years. Ed says he remembers buying them on site in North Carolina in the 1950s. I uncovered these in a shoebox in his closet when buying his collection back in 2006 or so. The specimens come in a glass-covered picture frame box. The box is 13.1 x 10.5 x 0.7 cm. valued $1000
